to understand the diversity and quality of what we show, a visit to our showroom in sydney's surry hills is essential: planet commonwealth is open seven days and displays our furniture and collectable artwork, as well as our full homewares range. we display multiple items from over seventy makers at any one time and pieces are usually displayed in the context of room settings.

bespoke furniture
planet furniture combines the unique resources of sustainably grown solid Australian hardwoods with the tradition of highly skilled timber craftsmanship and is designed by ross longmuir. our furniture is deceptively simple, streamlined and built to last.

solid timber wears incredibly well, and can even be restored if necessary. Certified sustainably grown range timber from re-growth australian forests is used rather than old growth or rainforest timber. these timbers are famous for their amazing density and therefore durability. combining these characteristics with the best quality joinery and sealing finishes adds years to the lifespan of our products. the main species that we use is spotted gum that is grown from southern queensland to southern new south wales. spotted gum comes in a range of colours and develops a beautiful rich depth of patina as it ages. many other materials are also used in our furniture such as metals, glass and upholstery materials.

producing locally, we offer a full design service. our bespoke service enables customisation of our standard furniture items to vary finishes and dimensions. our furniture is built to order in sydney by wonderful talented makers (whom we love!) regularly whole homes of furniture are custom designed and built. individual commissions for special items are welcomed. our mission is to strive for originality and a quality that makes sense of our australian context.

ceramics
planet's ceramics come from a diverse and dynamic range of australian makers. collectable and museum quality work sit alongside studio production ware. the makers employ various porcelains, bone china, stoneware and found clay bodies. they utilise a range of surface treatments and making methods from throwing to slip-casting, slab building, pinch pots and coiled work. we always look for originality and planet has launched the careers of many leading australian ceramicists.

textiles
planet's fine craft textile collection comes from specialists who have developed innovative and unique styles of making from a traditional basis. from artwork to functional items, methods employed include printing, dyeing, stitching, shibori, knitting and weaving. they incorporate unusual materials such as metal, newspaper and found botanical matter to create items such as cushions and scarves, napery and quilts, bags and toys. we have an extensive range of bedding including blankets, sheets, quilts, pillows and cushions in natural fiber, such as alpaca, angora, wool, linen, hemp, bamboo and cotton.

homewares
other homeware items feature beautiful natural fiber raw materials with an emphasis on the unusual. We search for functional sculptural items that have poetic meaning combined with handcrafted details and an environmental edge. our favorite category is items crafted from unusual materials. although our focus is primarily local, many items are imported direct from international craftspeople that share a sensibility and ethical approach to their work.

catalogues
catalogues will unfortunately never be appropriate for the custom and one only nature of most of our stock. the advantage is that there is always something unexpected and new to see with us! our staff work hard to service enquiries, so with an email and a digital photo we can easily provide necessary information to sell you something if you can't visit us in person. please keep in mind that our stock changes rapidly!

special events
planet regularly has events. over a number of years we have had fashion shows and musical evenings, book launches, talks and solo and group exhibitions. please contact us via email if you would like to be included in email invitations to these occasional events.
